1811 - 2011

Most of the paintings done by Barb have been of the Rocky Mountain National Parks in Canada.

This is an area also known as

'RUPERT's LAND'

or

DAVID THOMPSON
COUNTRY

To honour the cartographer that mapped much of Rupert's Land the image above has been reproduced. 'David Thompson Country' is a 22x30 inch lithograph made available in a limited edition of 200.

The lands that Barb depicts so well in her work are historically significant - especially in these years 2008 - 2011.  Much of the documented mapping and surveying of this area was done two hundred years ago by a man named David Thompson as he pushed through the Rockies many times looking for trade routes and resources for, first the Hudson Bay Company and later for the North West Company.

Jack Nisbet's book, 'Sources of the River', takes readers traveling with Thompson, using Thompson's actual field notes.

The Canadian Encyclopedia is a wealth of information on Ruperts Land and The Hudson Bay Company.

The University of Winnipeg has a Centre for Rupert's Land.

This online journal is an easy read on Thompson - even for non-historians!

Mark your calendars!

Here in Jasper National Park and the neighbouring community of Hinton Alberta there are plans to honour the year 2011, Thompson's last trek through the Athabasca Pass area, with a year long program of cultural celebrations.   While compiling the calendar for 2011 we welcome your input.  This year long celebration of culture will hopefully fall under the Cultural Capital program of Canada.  If you have ideas or want to know more about 2011 and the Cultural Capital program please write to us.
